WRITING CONTEST!

© 2004-2010, Speakable Gifts
A word of thanks to all of you who helped us by
participating in our first two writing contests. We are very
thankful for the way they turned out. And yes, it's now fall
again and we're ready for another one.

As before, details of Contest 3 are posted here, with links
to the specific Speakables involved. We welcome and
encourage those who joined us for the other contests,
even the winners. [As long as they're still in the
appropriate grades.] Of course, the work must be the
child's own original thoughts. Parents should help children
understand the requirements, but the entry should be
entirely the child's understanding and work for that
particular Speakable. Please allow your child the
opportunity to use his own line of reasoning in his
response.

Please send your entries to us in the body of an email
addressed to
contest@speakablegifts.com. Any questions
about this contest may also be sent to this email address. If
you'd prefer, you may send your entry via regular mail. It
may be typed or written on wide-ruled notebook paper.
Email us for the address. Entries must be postmarked or
dated no later than November 16, 2009.

Grades 2-4: Speakable 9-5-09 (Aesop Fable:"The Dog in
the Manger")

After reading this Speakable, pretend you are one of the
other animals on the farm. Write down what you would say
to the dog if he were to come asking you why he has no
friends.
Follow the directions on the Speakable page, using
less than 100 words.

Grades 5-6: Speakable 9-2-09 (A well known proverb)

Like all proverbs, this one is teaching an important lesson.
After you determine what that lesson is, write a story
showing how this proverb applies to a real life situation.

Follow the directions on the Speakable page. Entries should
be between 100 - 200 words.

JUDGING:

Children will be judged on the following criteria:

1. Creativity (Imagination)
2. Content (understanding of the Speakable involved)
3. Mechanics (following directions)

Graphics and illustrations are welcome but not necessary.
If used, they should be appropriate for the entry.
We maintain possession of all papers, so you may want to
keep a copy.

PRIZES:

There will be two first prizes: a $10.00 gift card to Barnes
and Noble for each winner. Each first place prize winner
also receives a Certificate of Achievement from us. We may
have a second place certificate, but not necessarily. Last
time we created a separate certificate for each of two
schools whose students participated. However, we can only
do this in situations where there are not a large number of
entries from classrooms. We hope you understand. But do
feel free to allow your students to send in their entries to
be included with all the others!

Note: We don't want to totally ignore the other Speakables.
If any of your children would like to try one of those and
send it in, we may have a Certificate of Achievement for
any of those we particularly like.

No matter how submissions are made, please include an
email address for notification and so that we might be able
to get a postal address for mailing any prizes. Please read
our
privacy policy about this.

Thanks so much. Hope you'll encourage your kids to take
part! It should be fun and should be helpful to them for
the future!
