No Birthday for John

How excited do your kids get about their birthdays? Of all the events of a given year, I’d venture a guess that for your children, and most children, their birthdays are at the top of the list for excitement. And well it should be. It’s the anniversary of their birth, a cause for celebration.

Imagine a child who doesn’t know when that special day is. Soon we’ll be posting fresh new Speakables (our writing activities for children) and as always, included will be the “Child of Courage” category. Our source for this Speakable so far has been the monthly child who is spotlighted at the VOM Kids of Courage site. Since I didn’t get to do it this month, I thought I’d link to a recent article about a little fellow in Sudan who “thinks” he is five years old. Imagine that: He thinks he’s five but can’t be sure. When you read this article (I hope to your children) you’ll see why. I hope reading this article as a family will help the youngsters in your home appreciate better what their lives are like, but more than that, it would be so good for their character growth if reading about John will stir up feelings of compassion and a desire to pray for this little boy and others like him. I sure do hope this is so. And as it says at the end of the article, pray with your kids that those who fight against peace in southern Sudan will come to know the Prince of Peace.

Check in later in August or early September for a fresh new writing project about another child or children of courage in the face of persecution.

For His Glory,

Maxine

A Good Resource for Parents

Monday, July 27th, 2009

We’ve said over and again, that here at Speakable Gifts, we have a heart for children. Both my mom and I have a commitment to finding and providing wholesome resources for these little ones. When my mom wrote Bright Gems For His Crown, she definitely poured her heart and a lot of love into every section. For those of you who are parents, I think we’d all agree that we want our children to develop important character qualities from an early age. From time to time, we’ll be suggesting books that we feel will be wholesome for your children.

I post over at another blog, the Christian Children’s Book Review with a group of lovely ladies who have this same commitment. I’d encourage you to follow this blog, as it is a great resource for parents.

I reviewed a book that I’d like to share with you. It’s called Sammy and His Shepherd, and SG recommends it. You can read the review here.

With Love,

Ben’s Guide

There is quite a lot going on in our government these days. Is your head spinning over it all? I have to say that mine is. In last fall’s newsletter, we talked about helping our children to appreciate their government, while including several links to good sites to help with that. One of those links is a big favorite with me and I think it’s worthwhile repeating, especially for some of you homeschooling parents who are preparing for the coming school year. Most folks will appreciate Ben’s Guide to U.S. Government for Kids, even as a fun place to go as a family. I particularly like it that it’s broken down into various age groups. Hop on over and bookmark it for future reference if you don’t have the time to look it over today.

One of these days we may be featuring a quote about government in one of our writing contests, so keep that in mind a well!

Talk to you soon, Lord willing!

Well, we’re back! We’re back from vacation and the long spring sale just ended, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t find a good deal at SG. We’re keeping the Dover Little Activity books at the sale price because we really want to see them in the hands of little children. They’re great books so we would strongly encourage you to take advantage of this special. We doubt that you’ll find a better price anywhere. For the special price, the books must be purchased as a nine pack assortment and we’ll keep them at this price until they are gone! Read all about it!
